Origin of Dealgan House
Curam Care Homes Dundalk was established in 2001 by sisters Nora Byrne and Catherine Farrelly, both nurses with long experience in caring for the elderly. The Home initially had 30 bedrooms but in 2004, a 20 bedroom extension was opened. Further minor expansions brought us to a capacity of 53 beds. In response to the demographic changes occurring in Ireland and the increasing demand for nursing home beds, a further 32 bedrooms and associated ancillary facilities were added on in 2016 bringing our current capacity to 84 beds.
Dealgan House provides a range of homely sitting and dining rooms for the enjoyment of our residents. A number of larger rooms will accommodate the weekly mass, Christmas parties, the annual art exhibition and other special events.
Dealgan House is registered by HIQA and is subject to regular inspection by that agency.
The aims and objectives of Curam Care Homes Dundalk are to
- Provide a home from home which will ensure a welcoming and homely environment to residents, their relatives and friends.
- Provide our residents with excellent nursing and personal care and to ensure that they have access to all required medical care and therapies.
- Create and maintain an ethos in which the needs of residents will come first and in which they will be accorded the dignity and respect to which they are entitled.
- Provide a safe and secure environment for our residents.
- Create a work environment in which our staff will feel valued and respected.
Curam Care Homes Dundalk caters for all categories of people of both genders and with all levels of dependencies. Our registration allows us accommodate anyone over the age of 18, but the majority of our residents are over 65 and most are significantly older.
To ensure the care provided is planned to meet individual needs, detailed assessments are undertaken on admission. Based on these assessment, a nurse and the resident or resident’s representative, devise a care plan, setting out objectives and realistic goals. This provides direction to care staff and will ensure that the care we are providing assists the resident to achieve his/her full potential.
Care plans are reviewed following feedback from the resident or in response to any changes in their personal needs or circumstances. As a minimum, care plans are reviewed every four months in consultation with the resident.
Nursing Care:
Curam Care Homes Dundalk provides excellent nursing and personal care to our residents. A qualified nurse, with experience of caring for the elderly, is on duty at all times and is assisted by a team of qualified Care Assistants. On admission to Dealgan House, residents can retain their own GP or our nursing staff will assist with a transfer to a local GP practice if required. Some GP’s carry out rounds in the home on a weekly basis and are on call in case of emergencies.
Respite and Convalescent Care:
Respiute care is sometimes required by families who care for an elderly family member at home while convalescent care gives a patient time to recover from major surgery prior to returning home. Dealgan House is registered with the VHI while other health insurers do not require registration. If a bed is available, we can provide respite and/or convalescent care.
Palliative and End-of-Life Care:
Dealgan House prides itself on the quality of end-of-life care and support provided to our terminally ill residents and their families. We understand that it is a difficult and sensitive time and our aim is to provide, nursing, psychological, spiritual and practical care and support to both the resident and his/her family. We welcome the Hospice palliative team to Dealgan House and work closely with them when palliative care is required.

Facilities of Dealgan House
The purpose-built home provides a range of bedrooms, sitting rooms and dining areas suitable to the varying needs of our residents. It is constructed on a spacious, 4 acre site on the western outskirts of Dundalk. The first phase was built around a central garden which is attractively landscaped and contains walkways, benches for sitting out, a variety of plants and shrubs, bird tables and a water feature. When the weather permits, our residents love to sit out in the courtyard to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. The extension currently underway will provide a second enclosed space which is being developed as a sensory garden.
The recent extension is comprised of the Tain Suite which has 15 bedrooms, sitting and dining facilities and a kitchenette, and the Sonas Suite, a Memory Loss Unit with 17 bedrooms and all the required facilities. Both suites operate as self-contained households led by a Homemaker. Residents of the Sonas Suite have access to the sensory garden in which they can relax or cultivate plants in raised beds.
A large function room was also built as part of the recent extension and provides space for events such as Church Services, the annual art exhibition, Christmas Parties and any other major functions.
Social Programmes are an important part of daily life at Dealgan House. A Sonas-trained activities coordinator is on duty 7 days per week and leads a programme of activities which include:
